Beneath the neon glow of Shibuya, a serene escape awaits. This is Senzoku, a neighborhood in Tokyo’s Ota Ward. Senzokuike, the area’s centerpiece, translates to “feet-washing pond”. Legend says Buddhist priest Nichiren washed his feet here in the 13th century.
Senzokuike Park surrounds the pond. It is famous for cherry blossoms in spring. The pond spans about 40,000 square meters. This makes it one of Tokyo’s largest.
Stroll the kilometer-long trail around Senzokuike. Joggers, families, and dog owners frequent it. Peer over Ikedzuki Bridge. Enormous koi swarm in the inky water below. Terrapins and ducklings also draw attention. People shout “kawaii” at the cute ducklings.
Nichiren’s impact remains widespread. He believed everyone could achieve enlightenment by chanting the Lotus Sutra. Utagawa Hiroshige depicted Nichiren’s visit in his “One Hundred Famous Views of Edo”. The print shows the “Senzoku no Ike Kesagakematsu” pine tree. Nichiren is said to have hung his robe on this tree.
Visit Myofukuji Temple east of the pond. Bamboo welcomes visitors as they enter this peaceful realm. Old stones mark significant places along the path. Many have Nichiren’s Lotus Sutra chant etched into them.
Once rural, Senzoku was mainly used by farmers. They grew rice and washed crops here. Several small streams feed the pond.
The Sakura Promenade leads from Ookayama to Senzokuike. It passes under the railway tracks at Senzokuike Station. A small shotengai splinters off into a suburban scene. You can explore the fishmongers and restaurants.
Cafe 634 offers anko-butter toast and fresh coffee. Patisserie AKANE tempts with baked goods. Caffè Santino serves yoshoku with pond views.
The Sakura Promenade continues along a stream. Cherry trees overhang the path. Floor tiles painted with cherry blossoms mark the route. Historic pictures show the area’s rural past. The promenade extends 12 kilometers to Omori Furusato-no-Hamabe Park.
Return to Senzokuike for sunset. The waterside becomes a tranquil escape. Parents chat as kids catch bugs in the park. A boardwalk hangs over the water’s edge. Reeds grow high in summer. Irises appear as seasons change. If the weather is right, the sun bursts across the sky.
Senzoku offers a blend of nature and history. It’s a place where you can go back and forth between the past and the future.
