St. Cornelius

Whispers of a miraculous rescue during a devastating flood, that’s how the story of St. Cornelius in Köln-Heumar begins. St. Cornelius Church, as it stands today, was built in 1834. But the tale of its patron saint reaches back much further. Legend has it, a statue of St. Cornelius miraculously appeared during a great flood in 1784, sparing the villages of Rath and Heumar from the raging waters. This event solidified St. Cornelius as the protector of the area, leading to the church’s dedication in his name. The original Romanesque tower of the old St. Cornelius church still stands about 100 meters north of the current structure, a silent witness to the enduring faith of the community. The present church, a neoclassical hall design with a circular apse and saddle roof, gained its striking octagonal tower in 1886. Inside St. Cornelius, vibrant stained-glass windows, installed in 1956, depict scenes from the Glorious and Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary. These radiant windows were a gift from Maria Mülhens, widow of the 4711 perfume company owner, commemorating her 75th birthday. The church also houses paintings of the crowned Mother of God and St. Cornelius in papal attire. A statue of St. Cornelius, believed to be the very one from the flood, resides within the church. Its journey has been as remarkable as the legend itself. After the old Romanesque church was demolished in 1825, the statue was kept in the Pfarrhofscheune which served as a temporary church for a decade. It then took its place on the Cornelius altar in the new church. The connection between St. Cornelius and the Mülhens family runs deep. Numerous contributions, from the electric organ to church bells and renovations, are credited to their generosity. In 1818, under Pfarrer Hieronymus Gymnich, a relic of St. Cornelius, a part of his skull, was brought from St. Severin in Cologne to further cement the church’s devotion. This act spurred a pilgrimage tradition to St. Cornelius, drawing worshippers seeking the saint’s intercession. While the fervor may have diminished over time, the annual parish feast day still honors St. Cornelius, a testament to the enduring power of faith and the legend of the miraculous flood.
