Overlooking the scenic Aberdeen waterfront and nestled within the Canadian International School of Hong Kong, sits the Leo Lee Arts Centre. This isn’t just any school building. It’s a testament to the power of community, a beacon of artistic expression, and a HK$100 million dream come true. The Leo Lee Arts Centre officially opened its doors on May 29, 2008. This marked a significant milestone for the Canadian International School, ushering in a new era for the arts. The grand opening was a star-studded affair, attended by prominent figures like Dr. Leo Lee, the Centre’s namesake and most generous donor. Also present were Secretary of Education, Michael Suen, renowned entrepreneur, Stanley Ho, and Consul General of Canada, Gerry Campbell. The journey of the Leo Lee Arts Centre began in 2004. The school recognized a growing interest in the arts among its students. They dreamt of a dedicated space for music, drama, dance, and visual arts. What followed was an exciting four-year journey. This culminated in the largest arts development ever undertaken within a Hong Kong school. The Leo Lee Arts Centre is a state-of-the-art facility. It houses eight spacious, multi-purpose rooms for art, drama, and music. Each room is equipped with student-friendly equipment, furnishings, and wall-to-wall soundproofing. The jewel in the crown is the 604-seat auditorium. This masterpiece features a retractable Canadian maple wood stage, complete with an orchestra pit. The auditorium boasts cutting-edge sound, lighting, and technical equipment, making it a truly world-class performance venue. The Leo Lee Arts Centre is more than just a school facility. It’s a gift to the wider Hong Kong community. The school allocates 500 hours annually for local schools and organizations to utilize the Centre as an artistic venue. This commitment reflects the school’s dedication to enriching the cultural landscape of Hong Kong. The creation of the Leo Lee Arts Centre was a community effort. Students, staff, governors, parents, and friends of the school rallied together for fundraising activities. From donations and charity balls to parent association events, the campaign united the entire school community.
