Spånga IP’s story begins long before the first whistle blew or starting pistol fired. Sweden’s first radio broadcasting station once occupied this very ground. Imagine the airwaves crackling with the latest news and entertainment. But progress, as it often does, demanded change. In 1971, the station was demolished to make way for a new era of activity. The construction of Spånga IP began, transforming the landscape into a hub of athletic pursuit. Two gravel football pitches emerged in 1947, a prelude to the full transformation. However, it wasn’t until 1978 that Spånga IP truly found its form. A lush, full-sized grass football pitch took center stage, encircled by running tracks and areas for jumping and throwing. A bandy rink with a 1,000-person capacity grandstand also appeared in 1977. This new arena hosted its inaugural event in December 1977, an international bandy match between Sweden and the Soviet Union. The total cost of Spånga IP reached approximately 17.4 million kronor. This investment created a space for athletes and community alike. Today, Spånga IP is a vibrant testament to the power of transformation. The spirit of competition thrives here. Spånga IS FK, Spånga IS Hockey, and Spånga/Bromstens BK all call this place home. Djurgårdens IF’s men’s bandy team also graces this field. Even AIK’s bandy teams, both men’s and women’s, have competed within these grounds. Beyond the roar of the crowds and the clash of competition, Spånga IP offers quiet moments of personal achievement. An outdoor gym stands ready for those seeking individual fitness. The football hall bustles with activity during winter, serving as a training ground for numerous Stockholm clubs. Spånga IP even welcomed the politically charged Järvaveckan event in June 2018, showcasing its versatility as a community gathering space. Spånga IP stands as a monument to the enduring human spirit.
