Strength from diversity. That motto encapsulates the spirit of West Island School. It is a place where differences are celebrated. Students come from over 40 nationalities. They speak 47 languages.

West Island School began its journey in 1991. The English Schools Foundation saw a need for another school on Hong Kong Island. Discovery Bay was growing and needed a secondary school. The school started as an offshoot of Island School. Its first home was a former military hospital.

Eighty-four Year 7 students formed the initial intake. They were divided into four classes. A purpose-built school was planned in Pokfulam. Award-winning architect Patrick Lau designed it. He also designed other international schools in Hong Kong.

In 1994, the new building opened. It had classrooms, labs, an auditorium, and a 25-meter indoor pool. Open-air walkways and air-conditioned corridors connected the blocks. Renovations continued over the years. By 2001, the school was crowded with over 1,000 students. A fourth block was added and opened in 2003.

West Island School provides secondary education for Years 7 to 13. The school provides modern liberal education. The curriculum is British-influenced and international. Years 7 to 9 follow the IB Middle Years Programme. This program builds critical thinking and global awareness. In Years 10 and 11, students prepare for IGCSE exams. Years 12 and 13 offer IB Diploma, IB Career-related Programme, and BTEC pathways.

West Island School is non-selective. It accepts students of all abilities. The school aims to support students with different learning needs. It offers English for academic purposes to students who require additional support. It also supports students who wish to develop their mother tongue. The school uses technology in the classroom. It is a 1:1 laptop school.

The school emphasizes well-rounded education. Students have access to various extracurricular activities. More than 100 activities are offered each term. These include Model United Nations, Hackathon Club, and sports. Sports activities include swimming, football, and badminton. Many students represent Hong Kong at a national level.

West Island School boasts excellent facilities. These include a library, theaters, science labs, and art classrooms. Sports facilities feature gymnasiums, outdoor courts, and a swimming pool. The school is near Hong Kong University playing fields. This provides further sports facilities.

West Island School students achieve impressive results. In 2023, the IB average score was 36. Many students pursue further education after graduation. Approximately 95% attend a higher educational institution.

The teachers at West Island School are highly qualified. They are experienced in international education. The school council governs the school. It includes teachers, parents, and management staff.
