What if I told you that the Bertha-von-Suttner-Gymnasium isn’t your typical brick-and-mortar school? Look right here. This impressive structure is actually a school built on two interconnected ships. It’s fondly referred to as the “Schulschiff,” moored on the Danube River. The Bertha-von-Suttner-Gymnasium, named after the Austrian Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has a fascinating history.

The story begins in the early 1990s. The collapse of the Soviet Union had left a void in the shipbuilding industry. The Österreichische Schiffswerften AG (ÖSWAG) shipyard in Korneuburg was looking for new opportunities. They came up with an innovative solution: a floating school! This brilliant idea solved the problem of finding land in a densely populated city. It also offered the unique advantage of relocation if needed.

The construction began, and despite some delays, the Bertha-von-Suttner-Gymnasium was ready to welcome students in 1994. Can you imagine attending classes with the gentle rocking of the waves? The school boasts 36 classrooms and administrative offices. The gymnasium is housed in a separate floating structure.

The school’s unique location has led to some interesting situations. In 2001, a barge accidentally rammed the Bertha-von-Suttner-Gymnasium. Thankfully, the damage was minor, and the school continued its mission of providing quality education. This “Schulschiff” is a testament to Viennese ingenuity and their commitment to education.
