Is this where time stands still? The Mural Cichy Memoriał in Warsaw seems to whisper stories of the past. This unique artwork, part of a larger project initiated by artist Arkadiusz Andrejkow in 2017, goes beyond the typical urban murals. It finds its home on the aged, wooden walls of barns, sheds, and even doors. Andrejkow, originally known for his abstract graffiti, stumbled upon the potential of these weathered surfaces during his travels through Poland. He felt a pull towards preserving the stories held within the very grain of these structures. What makes Mural Cichy Memoriał truly special is its connection to local communities. Andrejkow doesn’t paint famous figures. He brings to life the faces of ordinary people from the past. Using old family photographs provided by the building owners, he creates haunting and evocative portraits. These “deskale” as they are often called, due to their unique wooden canvas, act as a bridge between generations. They offer a glimpse into the lives of those who came before, their joys, their sorrows, their everyday existence. It is a quiet memorial, whispering tales of the past, ensuring their memory lives on, etched not in stone but in the heart of the wood.
