In 1904, a new chapter began in Cologne’s history with the opening of Kalker Friedhof. It wasn’t in Kalk, as its name suggests. The ever-growing city needed more space for its departed. The old Kalker Friedhof on Kapellenstraße had reached its limit. A generous merchant, Joseph Bardenheuer, stepped in. He donated land in nearby Merheim for the new Kalker Friedhof. This generous act ensured a peaceful resting place for generations to come. The cemetery officially opened on November 3rd, 1904. Fast forward to the 1960s. Kalker Friedhof expanded significantly, almost doubling in size. Today, this sprawling urban cemetery covers about 15.4 hectares. A prominent reminder of Bardenheuer’s generosity stands near the main entrance of Kalker Friedhof. A memorial commemorates his contribution to the community. His own ornate tomb, a testament to his prominence, is also situated near the entrance, a focal point for visitors to the Kalker Friedhof. Over 14,000 souls rest within Kalker Friedhof’s grounds. Among them is Aloys Thumb, the second-to-last mayor of Kalk, buried in November 1900, even before the official opening. Heinrich Welsch, a renowned pedagogue, also found his final resting place here. Each tombstone at Kalker Friedhof whispers a story of a life lived in Cologne, a connection to the city’s rich tapestry of history. A visit here offers a glimpse into the past, a moment of reflection amidst the bustling city.
