The Conjunto Nacional began its life in 1952. Argentine businessman José Tjurs envisioned a grand project. He wanted to create a Paulista Avenue equivalent to New York’s Fifth Avenue. His dream was to build a hotel and shopping center in one magnificent building. This was a bold idea. Avenida Paulista was largely residential at the time.
Architect David Libeskind was chosen to design this architectural marvel. His initial plan included a hotel. However city regulations intervened. The hotel component was scrapped. The design was altered. The final product was still groundbreaking. The Conjunto Nacional became one of São Paulo’s first truly modern multi-functional buildings.
Look closely. Notice how the building blends different uses. There are residential apartments. There are also commercial spaces. Offices and shops occupy various sections. The complex even boasts the once-famous Cine Astor and the luxurious Fasano Restaurant. Today it houses Livraria Cultura the largest bookstore in Latin America by built area.
The building’s clock is a prominent feature. It’s located at the top of the Edificio Horsa a part of the complex. Visible for miles it tells the time and displays the temperature. For many years the clock displayed various company logos. These changed over the decades reflecting the changing business landscape of São Paulo.
In 1978 a devastating fire struck the Conjunto Nacional. The flames threatened to destroy this architectural masterpiece. The fire was eventually contained. The building was significantly damaged. The fire highlighted safety concerns. It also showed the resilience of the city and its iconic structures.
Following the fire extensive renovations took place. The building was restored to its former glory. Today the Conjunto Nacional remains a symbol of São Paulo’s vibrant past and its forward-looking future.
