Built in 1912 Storängens Samskola stands before you. A testament to the vision of architect Ivar Callmander. He was a Storängen resident himself. This charming school is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a window into the history of Storängen. A vibrant community flourished here. The Stockholm-Saltsjö railway’s arrival in 1904 transformed the area. It attracted professionals and artists alike. Storängen became a desirable place to live. The need for a local school was apparent.

The Järnvägs AB Stockholm-Saltsjö company generously donated the land. They partnered with the local homeowners’ association. Together they formed AB Storängens Samskola. The school wasn’t just for Storängen children. Some students came from Järla and Saltsjö-Duvnäs. At its peak the school housed around fifty students. They were divided into four classes. The school ran privately. The beloved teacher Frøken Ebba Anjou retired in 1929. This marked a shift for Storängen children. After her retirement many started attending Vikdalens school instead.

Storängens Samskola is architecturally significant. It reflects the National Romantic style. The main section boasts two floors. Lower wings extend from either side. The tall central part has a hip roof. The wings feature gable roofs. The building is clad in horizontal red-painted wooden panels. The windows have small panes. Green painted shutters complete the picturesque facade. These were typical details in Storängen villas.

Storängssalen the school’s hall occupies the upper floor. It possesses double ceiling height. Originally designed for school gatherings crafts and gymnastics. It also served as a community space for meetings and celebrations. Today Storängssalen still hosts events. The hall’s walls and ceiling are adorned with striking decorations. These were painted by Filip Månsson. He was a renowned artist known for his work in Stockholm’s City Hall. Månsson’s work includes beautiful ceiling paintings. These paintings feature blue green and red tones. The hip roof’s windows provide soft natural light. Adding to the hall’s charm are paintings by local artists. Anton Genberg’s landscape of Storängen and Järlasjön is a highlight.

The nearly 9000 square meter Ängen lies south of the school. Donated in 1948 by Järnvägs AB Stockholm-Saltsjö. This meadow is a precious community asset. It remains undeveloped serving as a gathering and festival space. Storängens Samskola stands as a reminder of a thriving community. The school’s legacy endures. A testament to the past and a foundation for the future.
