This isn’t just any high school. The Joshibi High School of Art and Design is a private school for girls in Tokyo. It places a special emphasis on fine arts and design. Established in 1915, the school has a rich history of nurturing artistic talent.

Originally named Sato Girls’ High School in 1916, it reverted to its original name in 1951. The school initially stood in Hongō-ku. However, it moved to its current location in Wada, Suginami, in 1945 after the Bombing of Tokyo caused a fire. In January 2010, a new three-story building with two basement floors was completed.

The Joshibi High School of Art and Design celebrated its centennial anniversary in 2015. A special art exhibition marked the occasion at the Ueno Royal Museum. It showcased the school’s century-long contribution to the art world.

Inside the Joshibi High School Art Museum, you’ll find diverse works. These are from students honing skills in sketching, painting, graphic design, and sculpture. You can also see spatial design, computer graphics, printing, pottery, and art history projects. These young artists are the future of Japanese art.

The museum often displays works from the Joshibisai art festival. It is the school’s largest event. Students display their art and design works. They put on creative exhibitions. Sporting and cultural events occur too.

Notable alumnae include creator and art director Nagi Noda. Actresses Yoshiko Mita, Jitsuko Yoshimura, Kaori Momoi, and Narumi Yasuda also attended. Author and AV idol Mariko Kawana and voice actress Umeka Shōji are graduates as well. Olympic swimmer Naoko Kume honed her craft here.

The Joshibi High School Art Museum offers a unique glimpse into the artistic journey of young women. They are passionate about art and design. Their creativity knows no bounds.

As you leave the High School Art Museum, consider the impact of art education. Consider how it shapes young minds and fosters innovation. The Joshibi High School of Art and Design has been a vital force in Japan’s art scene for over a century. It continues to inspire future generations of artists.
