Did President Masaryk really receive bears as gifts? We stand before the former Medvedarium a testament to Prague Castle’s quirky past. This wasn’t just any bear enclosure. It’s a hidden chapter in Prague’s history.

The Medvedarium was built by Tomas Masaryk himself. He received two bears as gifts from the legions in 1919. These weren’t ordinary bears. They were a symbol of the nation’s newfound freedom. The bears’ arrival sparked a unique initiative. A special enclosure was built into the hillside near the castle walls.

But the Medvedarium’s story is far from simple. More bears arrived later. Some were gifts from other regiments. Others ended up there under less clear circumstances. The location itself was cleverly designed. Hidden from most visitors it blended into the natural landscape. It was a surprisingly practical solution for keeping the bears contained.

Life wasn’t always easy for the Medvedarium’s residents. Several bears died. Others escaped causing minor havoc and injuries to castle staff. The escapes were famously chaotic. One bear even got lost in the city streets. It was eventually found by President Novotny during a stroll!

The Medvedarium’s final chapter is rather abrupt. In 1960 all the bears were relocated. This marked the end of the Medvedarium’s era. It’s existence is only remembered today by a small building and some caves.

Today we can only imagine the sounds of these majestic creatures. Their roars echoing through the castle walls. Their presence a curious footnote to Prague Castle’s grandeur. The remnants of the Medvedarium remind us that even in a place of historical importance. Unexpected stories and strange events unfold. The legacy of the Medvedarium remains a captivating blend of history. Politics and a touch of unpredictable bear behavior.
