The Torre Mata Atlântica is part of the Cidade Matarazzo complex. This is a mixed-use development that includes housing, offices, hotels, shops, restaurants, a cultural center, and even a chapel. The building itself is mixed-use too. It has hotel suites, residential apartments, and commercial spaces. Rosewood manages all of these.
Ateliers Jean Nouvel designed the architectural concept. The tower occupies about 3,000 square meters of the 30,000 square meter plot.
Landscape architecture plays a leading role here. The goal was to equalize the site’s chaotic landscape. It features buildings of various types from different eras. Vegetation fills the empty spaces creating a relationship between the volumes. The Torre Mata Atlântica was born from this concept. Its large stepped terraces are covered in trees. They evoke the green slopes of Serra do Mar.
The front garden is a dense forest. It protects the privacy of the occupants. It disguises the massive volume of the building from those passing by. Huge raised planters sit on the 10th, 16th, and 21st floors. The building has the largest terraces here. The entire area on the top floor the 27th floor is a garden. Vegetation permeates the building’s volume. Medium-sized planters and large vases adorn the apartment balconies. This creates a changeable building with an unpredictable character.
Planting trees on skyscrapers has become a trend. It offers aesthetic appeal and environmental symbolism. But this situation involves increased risks. Root control, falling branches, or the tree itself are concerns. These risks are even greater for a tower over a hundred meters high with mature trees. In-depth risk studies were necessary to enable the project. Solutions were developed to minimize these risks.
Benedito Abbud Arquitetura Paisagística designed the landscape for the Torre Mata Atlântica. The project was completed in 2022. Eduardo Castello, Eduardo Ikoma, and Maíra Acayaba captured its beauty in photographs.
An essential condition was the trees’ resistance to winds. Computational models of native species were created. The simulation considered the wood’s resistance and branch arrangement. It also took into account the crown and foliage shape during extreme winds. Approved species were positioned according to their characteristics.
Solutions for anchoring and physically containing trees were developed. This included both buried parts and aerial parts. This ensures an extra layer of security.
The Torre Rosewood is an homage to the Mata Atlântica forest. It is a sophisticated, habitable vertical forest. It stands 100 meters tall. It merges Jean Nouvel’s innovative design with Brazilian nature. It also captures the effervescence of São Paulo.
