From a coreto in Rio de Janeiro to a global empire, the Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus has a story that’s nothing short of dramatic. Right here in São Paulo stands a testament to that story, the magnificent Templo de Salomão. The Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus, often called simply the Universal Church, was founded in 1977 by Edir Macedo and Romildo Ribeiro Soares. Their first “temple” was a former funeral parlor in Rio de Janeiro, a far cry from the grand structure before you. The church quickly gained followers, spreading throughout Brazil and internationally. By 2010, according to the IBGE census, the Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus boasted over six thousand temples and twelve thousand pastors in Brazil alone. The growth was phenomenal, unheard of for any other religious denomination in the country in such a short time. The church’s headquarters eventually moved to São Paulo, culminating in the construction of the Templo de Salomão. This replica of the ancient Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem is a colossal structure, standing as tall as an eighteen-story building and covering an area equal to sixteen soccer fields. The Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus spared no expense, with the construction costing an estimated 680 million reais. The altar and facade even incorporate stones from Israel. Interestingly, the Templo de Salomão is the first religious building in Brazil to receive LEED certification for its sustainable design. The Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus has a hierarchical structure similar to the Catholic Church, with bishops, pastors, and volunteer workers called obreiros. Interestingly, pastors rotate locations, moving with “just their wives and suitcases.” Beyond its religious services, the Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus engages in extensive social projects, from aiding disaster victims to running schools and providing healthcare. The Fazenda Nova Canaã in Bahia, for instance, is a project designed to alleviate suffering caused by drought in the northeast. The church also owns and operates a vast media empire, including the Rede Record television network, newspapers, magazines, a record label, and a robust online presence. This media network has been instrumental in spreading the church’s message and attracting new followers, with programs emphasizing testimonials of financial and personal success. The Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus has not been without its controversies, ranging from accusations of financial irregularities to criticism of its prosperity theology. Yet, the church continues to thrive, with the Templo de Salomão standing as a symbol of its remarkable journey and its impact on Brazilian society. It’s a place that draws millions, not just for faith, but for a glimpse into a modern story of ambition and spiritual seeking.
