Creaking metal and echoing footsteps haunt this place. This is Battery Hartshorne. It stands as a silent sentinel overlooking the waters. Battery Hartshorne is a testament to a time of conflict and innovation.

Let’s step back to the late 19th century. The United States braced for potential conflict with Spain. Coastal defenses became a priority. Fort Smallwood was established in the 1890s to protect Baltimore’s harbor. Battery Hartshorne was a key part of this fort.

Battery Hartshorne was named on November 18, 1902. It honored Captain Benjamin M. Hartshorne Jr. He was a soldier of the 7th U.S. Infantry. Hartshorne lost his life in the Philippine-American War. He was killed in action near Lanang, Samar, on January 2, 1902. Naming the battery after him immortalized his sacrifice.

Imagine this place bustling with activity in the early 1900s. From 1900 to 1927 two six-inch disappearing carriage guns stood here. These guns were a marvel of engineering. They could be raised to fire and then lowered. This offered protection from enemy fire. These disappearing guns were state-of-the-art. They represented America’s commitment to defense.

The guns of Battery Hartshorne never saw major combat. By 1927, the War Department deemed coastal defenses less vital. The guns were removed. In 1928, Fort Smallwood became a Baltimore City park. Battery Hartshorne transitioned from military installation to a historic site.

Today, Battery Hartshorne is mostly sealed from public access. But its presence is still felt. It serves as a tangible link to the past. It reminds us of the soldiers who served and the conflicts that shaped the nation.

As you stand here consider the layers of history beneath your feet. From its origins as a coastal defense. To its role in honoring a fallen hero. Battery Hartshorne embodies the spirit of duty and sacrifice. It stands as a place of reflection. It connects us to a time when the nation stood ready to defend its shores.
