Perched atop a rugged cliff, high above the Danube, Burg Greifenstein is a sight to behold. This imposing castle, a true testament to the past, dominates the landscape with its mighty stone towers and walls, a silent sentinel that has stood watch for centuries.

Imagine yourself transported back to the 11th century, a time of knights and crusades. The Burg was born as a vital stronghold, a key piece in the defense system of the Danube Valley. As you gaze out at the river, imagine the swift boats carrying soldiers and supplies, the creaking of the drawbridge, the clang of armor as it marched towards the Burg.

While the exact details of the first years remain shrouded in time, it is known that it was built by the Bishop of Passau. The Burg changed hands many times throughout its turbulent history. The fierce Turks, in 1529, laid siege to the Burg, claiming it for a time but eventually surrendering it back.

Over time, the Burg Greifenstein evolved from a formidable fort to a prison. Imprisoned within those stern walls, priests and lay people alike served their harsh sentences in the tower’s dungeon. The echoes of their despair might still linger within the stone walls.

In the 19th century, Johann I von Liechtenstein restored the Burg to its former glory. He brought it back to life, transforming it into a Romantic vision of a Medieval castle. Inside, the walls are adorned with art and weapons meticulously collected from the nearby Liechtenstein castles.

Today, the Burg stands as a testament to the power of the past, a source of endless stories, whispers of battles won and lost, of prisoners and soldiers, and the relentless march of time. Even though it is closed for now, the Burg Greifenstein remains a cherished relic, patiently awaiting the day its doors shall open again, welcoming new explorers into its captivating history.
