Beneath the shadow of the renowned Sensoji Temple, discover the hidden gem of Komagata. Komagata Hall is a small Buddhist temple. It stands on a street corner, a quiet sentinel. Komagata and Sensoji are intimately linked. Komagata Hall whispers tales of Sensoji’s origins. Some say Komagata marks the spot of Sensoji’s original gate. A more captivating story places it where two fishermen discovered a Kannon statue. This discovery in 628 A.D. led to Sensoji’s founding. The village headman recognized the statue’s divine nature. He devoted his life to Buddhist teachings. His home became the first Sensoji Temple. Komagata Hall sits near the Sumida River. It was a landing point for pilgrims arriving by ferry. They would offer their first prayers at Komagata before visiting Sensoji. The hall now faces west. But until 1742, it faced the river. Komagata has been rebuilt many times. Its most recent reconstruction was in 2003. Komagata enshrines the Bodhisattva Bato-kannon. This deity depicts Kannon with a horse’s head. The horse symbolizes transportation. Bato-kannon became the god of traffic safety. The “horse-shaped” deity gives Komagata its name. This name also belongs to the small district nearby. You can view the Bato-kannon statue on the 19th of each month. Komagata Hall celebrates its annual festival on April 19th. Komagata, a quiet corner steeped in history. It offers a unique glimpse into Asakusa’s spiritual past. It’s a must-see for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the area.
