How about a journey back to a time of national heroes? We are standing at Švermov in Prague. It is a place carrying a weighty name and legacy. This area echoes with stories of a man named Jan Šverma.

Jan Šverma was no ordinary man. He was a Czechoslovak communist who rose to prominence after the communist coup in 1948. Imagine a time of political upheaval. Then Šverma became a national hero, an icon of the new regime.

Let’s delve into Jan Šverma’s life. Born in 1901, he grew up in Prague-Smíchov. He embraced communist ideals early on. In 1921, he helped found the Communist Party.

Šverma’s political career was meteoric. He worked in the communist youth movement. He edited the newspaper Rudé večerník. Teaming up with other communist leaders like Klement Gottwald, Šverma became a key figure in the party.

Between 1926 and 1928, Šverma studied in Moscow. He attended the Communist International’s World Congress. He returned to Prague to support Gottwald who was now the new General Secretary. Šverma’s charisma and intellect set him apart.

As we stand here think about Šverma’s independent streak. He dared to voice his own ideas, and this distinguished him from Gottwald. Šverma envisioned cooperation with Social Democrats. Also, he thought allying with small farmers would be beneficial. This divergence made him a target of criticism from the Moscow-based leadership.

During the Nazi occupation, Šverma went into exile. He first fled to Paris and then to Moscow. He became the head of the Komintern’s Moscow foreign broadcasting station. His popularity soared far beyond that of Gottwald.

In 1944, Šverma joined the partisans in the Slovak mountains. Already ill with tuberculosis, he died of exhaustion during a snowstorm. He was climbing Mount Chabenec with 84 other partisans.

After his death, Šverma’s legacy was cemented. The communist regime immortalized him. Numerous places and institutions were named in his honor. Among them were mines, factories and even this part of Kladno.

Reflect on how history shapes our surroundings. The name Švermov is a testament to a complex past. A past filled with political passion, ideological conflict, and the rise and fall of national heroes. This place, Švermov, serves as a reminder of the ever-present weight of history in our everyday lives.
