From its humble beginnings in a Scout hall. Jubilee Community Church now stands as a testament to faith and community. Nestled in Observatory this vibrant church reflects Cape Town’s rich cultural tapestry.
Founded in 1983 as Vineyard Fellowship. The church initially met in a Scout hall under a bridge in Plumstead. A move to Aliwal Road Primary School in Wynberg followed soon after. The church thrived. Relationships were emphasized alongside worship and Biblical teachings.
The 1980s were turbulent in South Africa. Apartheid intensified. Jubilee Community Church intentionally became a non-racial fellowship. Members participated in community projects. They helped with housing carpet weaving and health clinics in informal settlements. Strong bonds formed with Khayelitsha residents. This led to the establishment of Uzukho Lwakhe Church in Khayelitsha. Similar community engagement in Tambo Square near Gugulethu resulted in the founding of Khanyisa Church in Gugulethu.
In 1990 Simon and Lindsey Pettit immigrated from the UK. Simon became the lead elder. This strengthened ties with the Newfrontiers family of churches. The Pettits had a close friendship with Terry Virgo. Virgo a leader in Newfrontiers regularly visited and provided guidance.
A name change to Jubilee Community Church occurred in 1991. This reflected the church’s desire for greater involvement with Cape Flats communities. The new name resonated with biblical imagery of freedom and good news for the poor. The church acquired a complex in Crawford. It proved too small for services. So the main Sunday celebrations continued at other locations. These included the Waverley complex in Mowbray and later Wynberg Boys High School.
The Jubilee Centre opened in 2000. This was a refurbished Italtile warehouse in Observatory. The large space provided ample facilities for meetings children’s ministries social projects and offices. It even included a health center serving the wider community. Observatory’s location proved ideal. It was accessible by public transport. It was near Groote Schuur Hospital the University of Cape Town and Cape Peninsula University of Technology residences.
The church continued to grow. It fostered relationships with other churches in Cape Town. This led to participation in city-wide initiatives. These included prayer rallies leadership conferences and evangelistic campaigns. Jubilee Community Church also partnered with churches internationally. This expanded the church’s reach beyond Cape Town. They helped establish Advance furthering gospel spread across South Africa and beyond. The church played a vital role in planting several churches across the country.
Today Jubilee Community Church stands as a beacon of faith and community engagement. Its story is a testament to the power of faith and its enduring impact on Cape Town.
