It’s hard to believe that this peaceful island was once a place of isolation and hardship, but history is full of surprises. Right here, in the heart of Wellington Harbour, lies Matiu / Somes Island, a place that has witnessed a wealth of stories, both triumphant and tragic.

Matiu / Somes Island is a place of immense cultural and historical significance. The island was used as a place of refuge by pre-colonial Māori. Remnants of their habitation, such as middens, can still be found today. The island, however, has its secrets. It was also used for human quarantine from 1840 until the 1920s. Ships arriving in Wellington Harbour with infectious passengers or crew would disembark them on Matiu / Somes Island for care and treatment before berthing in the city. This was a time of great fear and uncertainty for those affected.

In the 20th century, Matiu / Somes Island became a place of internment. During both World War I and World War II, “enemy aliens,” including long-term residents of New Zealand who originated from enemy countries, were held captive here. Anti-aircraft gun emplacements were also built on the island during World War II. Their remains can be seen today, a stark reminder of the time when Matiu / Somes Island was a place of conflict.

The island’s environment was severely degraded during its long period of use for quarantine and defense purposes. But, in 1981, work began to restore the island’s natural beauty. More than 30 years of environmental restoration and the translocation of species have brought the island back to life. Matiu / Somes is now home to many native birds, invertebrates, reptiles, and plants. The island has been designated a scientific and historical reserve since 1995, and it welcomes visitors who are curious about its complex past.

Today, Matiu / Somes Island is a sanctuary where nature prevails, a vibrant ecosystem that is a reminder of the island’s resilience, a place that represents the power of restoration and the importance of preserving our natural heritage.
