“What stories could these walls tell?” Imagine yourself standing before the Truth Lutheran Church in Shenzhen. This church carries a history spanning over a century. It has seen Shenzhen transform from a county to a modern metropolis.
The story of Truth Lutheran Church begins in 1846. European evangelists arrived in Bao’an county which is now Shenzhen. They came from the Protestant Basel Mission and Germany’s Rhenish Missionary Society. In 1898 the Rhenish group established a church in today’s Luohu District. This marked the humble beginnings of what would become a resilient and vital part of Shenzhen’s Christian community.
Over the next five decades the church persevered through significant upheaval. It survived the rise and fall of governments invasion and civil war. In 1949 the same year the People’s Republic of China was founded the church found a new home. It was located at 22 Heping Lu Peace Road in Bao’an county.
However the church’s journey was not without its trials. During the Cultural Revolution services were stopped. Pastors were sent to farms and the building was used by other work units. The historic government meeting in 1978 marked a turning point. It kick-started the reform and opening up that transformed Bao’an county. This allowed the church to revive its congregation. In 1983 the Heping Lu location was reclaimed. By 1984 it became Shenzhen’s first church to resume services after the Cultural Revolution.
The Truth Lutheran Church continued to grow. The congregation expanded into the thousands. The government granted them a large parcel of land. In 2002 the Shenzhen Christian Church opened in the Meilin area. It was designed to resemble Noah’s Ark. This building with its angular white structure became a prominent landmark. It includes halls offices meeting rooms and dormitories.
While the original Heping Lu church no longer exists its legacy lives on. A namesake Christian Peace Church continues nearby. Additionally a third building was converted into Christian Luohu Church in 2011. These transitions reflect the church’s adaptability.
Today the Truth Lutheran Church stands as a testament to faith resilience and community. It embodies Shenzhen’s transformation. It shows how faith can endure through changing times. As you stand here consider the dedication of those who kept this church alive. It has been a beacon of hope and a place of worship for generations. The Truth Lutheran Church remains a vital part of Shenzhen’s spiritual landscape offering solace community and a connection to a rich history.
