Did the name William O. Lockridge ever cross your mind as you approached the Bellevue Neighborhood Library? This striking building, a modern marvel amidst the historic tapestry of Washington D.C., holds more than just books. It carries the legacy of a community activist, intertwined with the spirit of the Bellevue neighborhood. The Bellevue Neighborhood Library first opened its doors in 1959 as the Washington Highlands Branch Library. It was a product of a public works program, a testament to the city’s commitment to knowledge and community development. Fast forward to 2012, a rebirth. British architect, David Adjaye, reimagined the library. He transformed it into the architectural gem we see today. The DC Council then renamed it to honor William O’Neal Lockridge, a local activist who championed the community’s needs. Adjaye’s design is unique. Architectural Record described it as a “Brutalist treehouse,” a far cry from the sleek lines of other modern libraries. The building adapts to the hilly terrain, a series of pod-like structures cascading down the slope. The entrance, nestled at the lowest point, invites you in under massive concrete pilotis. Smaller, polygonal structures branch out, housing dedicated spaces for children, teens, and meeting rooms. These fragmented shapes add a sculptural element, preventing the library from overwhelming the surrounding neighborhood. Interestingly, the initial design sparked controversy. Some community members felt it was too imposing. Adjaye responded by incorporating vertical cedar fins, softening the concrete and adding a touch of warmth. Inside, a grand staircase draws your eye upward to the light-filled upper floors. A green-tinted light well cuts through the center, bathing the interior in a subtle glow. The top floor, home to the adult reading room, offers a tranquil escape with views of the surrounding woods. The Bellevue Neighborhood Library stands as a testament to the power of community, a place where architecture and activism intertwine. It’s a place where the past and present meet, offering a space for learning, growth, and connection.
