“A haven for seekers” That’s how many describe the Sydney Unitarian Church. This unassuming building on Francis Street holds a rich and often surprising history. Founded around 1850 as the Unitarian Communion or Unitarian Congregational Church it first met in a Macquarie Street chapel. This original chapel opened in 1853 near the Mint.

The congregation’s growth led to the construction of a grand new church on Liverpool Street in Hyde Park. Work began in 1872. The building opened in August 1879 a special project spearheaded by the Reverend Dr Pillars. Tragically Dr Pillars never saw its completion. He died accidentally in 1875 while rock climbing.

The Liverpool Street church thrived for decades. However increasing traffic disrupted services in the early 20th century. The property was almost sold in 1930. A high bid of 37000 pounds was rejected. Sadly this magnificent building suffered a devastating blow. A fire gutted the entire structure on November 6 1936. The empty site was sold in 1938 during the Great Depression for 23000 pounds.

Undeterred the congregation rebuilt. A new church opened at its current location 15 Francis Street on November 23 1940. Reverend Wyndham Selfe Heathcote officiated. Reverend William Bottomley from Melbourne also participated. This building stands as a testament to the resilience and faith of the Sydney Unitarian Church community. It’s a place where open minds meet diverse perspectives a legacy of progressive thinking continuing the legacy of those who came before.
