Could this tranquil sanctuary be the same place where the fate of Europe once hung in the balance? Here at St. Josef’s Church, perched high on the Kahlenberg, echoes of a tumultuous past whisper through the centuries. The origins of St. Josef’s Church date back to 1628, when the Camaldolese monks broke ground on their new monastery. The monks’ serene existence was shattered in 1683 when the Ottoman army, in its second siege of Vienna, razed the church to the ground.

The church we see today, rebuilt after the siege, stands as a testament to resilience and faith. Inside, baroque paintings adorn the walls, transporting you back to the opulence of the 18th century. Look closely, and you’ll notice two paintings by the Bohemian master, Johann Peter Brandl, flanking the high altar. These are not just any artworks; they are gifts from Count Franz Anton von Sporck, a prominent figure in the Baroque period. The church’s connection to Poland runs deep, symbolized by the copy of the Black Madonna of Częstochowa displayed prominently.

Why Poland, you ask? The answer lies in the events of 1683. It was the Polish King John III Sobieski who, answering Austria’s desperate plea, launched a daring rescue from this very hill. Picture the scene: Sobieski, having prayed for divine intercession, led his forces down the slopes, joining the allied troops to crush the Ottoman siege and secure Vienna for Christendom. The church, now under the care of the Polish Resurrectionist order, honours this legacy. As you leave St. Josef’s, gaze out at the sweeping panorama of Vienna. Remember, you stand on ground that has witnessed both destruction and liberation, a silent guardian of history overlooking the city it once helped to save.
