COGIC’s roots go back to the late 1890s. This was a time of racial tension in the South. Black Baptist preachers sought a tangible connection with God. They preached that believers could experience freedom from sin. Miraculous healing was also possible. These ideas came from the Holiness movement. Some Black Baptists considered these teachings heretical. The ministers were expelled. They then formed the Church of God in Christ.
In 1907 Charles Harrison Mason sought a deeper spiritual experience. He traveled to the Azusa Street revival in Los Angeles. There he encountered the Pentecostal message. True believers could experience the Spirit. This was shown by speaking in tongues. Mason brought this message back to the South. It spread rapidly.
COGIC was interracial in its early years. By the 1920s it had 21 churches in Georgia. Converts sought a more direct experience with God. This was different from the sermon-centered Baptist and Methodist churches. COGIC grew significantly in the late 1960s and 1970s. By the 1980s it had more members than several Presbyterian denominations combined.
COGIC isn’t just an escape. It has demonstrated social radicalism. This includes open pacifism during World War I. Martin Luther King Jr. preached his last sermon at COGIC’s Mason Temple in Memphis during the 1968 sanitation workers’ strike. COGIC seeks contact with the divine in the present. They want heaven below. This may explain the denomination’s growth during times of social change.
