A rusting beauty lies before you. This is the SS Heroic. A steel-hulled steam tugboat. She’s a relic of Sydney’s maritime past. Built in 1909 in South Shields UK. She worked tirelessly for Thomas Fenwick. A Sydney tugboat operator.

The SS Heroic wasn’t just any tugboat. World War I saw her commandeered by the British Admiralty. Renamed Epic she rescued ships off the Scilly Isles. A far cry from the calm waters of Homebush Bay. Imagine her battling stormy seas. Saving lives.

After the war she returned to Sydney. She continued her work. A loyal servant of the harbor. Then World War II arrived. Once again she played a vital role. She towed the Allara back to Sydney. After the Allara was torpedoed. This courageous tugboat saved the Allara’s crew.

In 1973 she was sold to J B Mullins. Renamed Bustler II she was brought to Homebush Bay. Her days of toil were over. Soon she was broken up. Her hull remains. A testament to her strength and service. Lying on her port side. Her bow points south. Near the mangroves.

This is more than just a shipwreck. It’s a story of bravery and endurance. The SS Heroic. A symbol of Sydney’s rich history. Her rusting hull whispers tales of the sea. Tales of war and peace. A silent guardian of the bay. A magnificent wreck. Don’t forget her story.
