Opicina Campagna connects Trieste to a rich history. The location was inhabited since the second millennium BC. It was originally an Illyrian settlement. The Veneti arrived around the 10th century BC. They named it Tergeste. Later the Carni captured the town. In 177 BC it became part of the Roman Republic.

Julius Caesar granted it Roman colony status. He recorded the name as Tergeste. Trieste flourished during the Imperial period. It was on the road from Aquileia to Istria. Emperor Augustus built walls around the city. Trajan built a theatre.

Trieste submitted to Charlemagne in 788. It became a maritime trade rival to Venice. Venice occupied it briefly. Trieste petitioned Leopold III of Habsburg for annexation. The agreement was signed in 1382.

Trieste maintained autonomy. It lost ground as a trade hub to Venice and Ragusa. Pope Pius II saved it from ruin. Venice limited Trieste’s territory. Trieste was assaulted again in 1468 by Emperor Frederick III. He sacked the city.

By the 18th century Trieste became an important port for the Austrians. Emperor Charles VI made it a free port in 1719. Maria Theresa’s reign marked a prosperous era.

During the Napoleonic Wars Trieste was occupied by French troops. From 1809 to 1813 it was annexed into the Illyrian Provinces. After the wars Trieste continued to prosper as a free imperial city.

Trieste became Austria’s main trading port. Austrian Lloyd shipping line was founded. By 1913 it had 62 ships. Municipal autonomy was restored in 1860. Trieste became capital of the Austrian Littoral.

In 1882 an assassination attempt was made on Emperor Franz Joseph. Italy annexed Trieste after World War I. In the late 1920s TIGR carried out bomb attacks. Several monumental buildings were built in the Fascist style.

During World War II Trieste was occupied by Wehrmacht troops. It became part of the Operation Zone of the Adriatic Littoral. The Risiera di San Sabba concentration camp was built.

In 1945 Yugoslav Partisans occupied Trieste. British Field Marshal Harold Alexander condemned the occupation. Trieste came under British-U.S. military administration.

In 1947 Trieste became the Free Territory of Trieste. It was divided into Zone A and Zone B. In 1954 most of Zone A joined Italy. Zone B became part of Yugoslavia.

Trieste is located near Slovenia. It lies on the Gulf of Trieste. The city sits at the foot of the Karst Plateau. The climate is humid subtropical. The bora wind can severely affect the weather.
