How about a journey that intertwines faith, history, and community? Today we are standing before Igreja Nossa Senhora do Monte Serrat. This church stands as a testament to Sāo Paulo’s rich past.

Igreja Nossa Senhora do Monte Serrat’s story began long before its official founding in February 1914. The area’s history dates back to 1560. The Portuguese arrived and the Tupi Indians moved. The Indians then established villages. They founded São Miguel, Itaquaquecetuba and Nossa Senhora dos Pinheiros. Jesuit priests guided them. In Nossa Senhora dos Pinheiros they built a chapel. It was dedicated to Nossa Senhora dos Pinheiros.

The priests preached Christian doctrine. They also performed masses and baptisms. The chapel became an important place of worship. People came not only from the village but also from the surrounding areas. Igreja Nossa Senhora do Monte Serrat is more important for its history. Its importance goes beyond its current structure. It is known as “the church of Largo de Pinheiros”. This name links it to the founding of Pinheiros village in the 16th century.

Preserving Igreja Nossa Senhora do Monte Serrat is vital. It is about more than preserving architecture. It means safeguarding the origins of one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods.

In 1640, the religious leadership changed. Benedictine monks from the São Bento Monastery in São Paulo took over. Their chapel was dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Monte Serrate. They extended this name to the Pinheiros chapel.

The parish has many active groups. These include Catechesis and Marriage ministries. There is also a Welcome ministry.

In 2020, the parish commissioned a replica. It is of the original image of Nossa Senhora do Monte Serrate. This image is also known as “La Moreneta”.

In late 2021, Padre Vandro Pisaneschi received a call. It was from the Sanctuary of Montserrat in Catalonia. They asked if he would like to start a Confraria in Brazil. The Confraria was about to celebrate its 800th anniversary in 2023. Padre Vandro invited members of the parish ministries. More than 20 people were interested. The first meeting was on March 19, 2022. It was the day of Saint Joseph. Padre Vandro discussed the history. He also spoke about bringing a replica of the image to their parish.

The Brazilian Confraria of Nossa Senhora do Monte Serrate was founded on October 9, 2022. Nine members traveled to the Sanctuary in Catalonia. In 2023, the Confraria celebrated its 800th anniversary. They had an audience with Pope Francis at the Vatican. In September 2023, new members were initiated. Seven members went to Rome on October 7, 2023. They attended the audience with the Pope. One member represented Brazil.

The Confraria meets on the last Saturday of each month at 5 PM. They pray the rosary together.

Padre Vandro Pisaneschi has been the pastor since 2019. He is also the pastoral coordinator. He works for the Vicariate for Education and the University.
