Have you ever wished upon a Jizo statue? At Mangan-ji Temple in Tokyo’s Setagaya Ward you can. Mangan-ji Temple isn’t just any temple. It’s a significant site steeped in history and brimming with fascinating stories. It’s said that Mangan-ji Temple’s origins trace back to the Heian period although it later fell into disrepair. Revived in 1470 it served as a chapel for Todoroki Castle. It even developed into a seminary temple.
Over the centuries Mangan-ji Temple moved from Todoroki to its present location. During the Edo period the Tokugawa shogunate granted it a stipend. A pivotal moment saw its mountain name change from Iozan to Chikozan. Its primary object of worship shifted from Yakushi Nyorai to Dainichi Nyorai. Yet Mangan-ji Temple remained famous for its Jizo Bosatsu statue. Legend says it grants a single wish to each devotee.
But the temple’s significance extends beyond its religious history. It’s the final resting place of Hosoi Kotaku. This renowned Edo period Confucian scholar calligrapher and seal carver is buried here. His grave is even designated a National Historic Site. You can see Hosoi’s calligraphy on the temple’s main gate. It’s a subtle detail easily missed.
Nearby is the Todoroki Fudo subsidiary chapel. Its honzon a Fudo Myoo statue dates back to the Nara period. Temple lore speaks of a Heian period priest’s dream. He was guided to enshrine this statue in Musashi Province near abundant water. The Todoroki Ravine with its river and waterfalls became its home. The main hall and gate were even relocated from Mangan-ji in 1952 and 1968 respectively.
The Todoroki Valley itself adds another layer to Mangan-ji Temple’s allure. The waterfall is known as Fudo’s riken wisdom sword waterfall. The name Todoroki is said to come from the roaring sound of the waterfall itself. This area offers a peaceful contrast to the bustling city beyond the temple walls.
