The Salvation Army started its work in Sweden in 1882. Their first meeting occurred at the Ladugårdslandsteatern near Östermalmstorg. Imagine that first gathering. It must have been filled with hope and purpose.
After collecting funds, they began building their own place. In December 1887, the Frälsningsarméns tempel opened at Östermalmsgatan 69. For many years, it was known as Stockholms 1:a kår. Later, its name changed to Templet, Stockholm. This name reflects its importance as a central location.
Notice the building’s design. The large assembly hall is on the second floor. This gives it space and high ceilings. It also features a gallery. The entrance floor had rooms for smaller gatherings. Over the years, many renovations have occurred, especially on the lower floors. An elevator was installed. It goes all the way up to the meeting hall. The exterior remains largely unchanged. It has been a protected historical landmark for a long time.
Originally, the meeting hall could hold over 1200 people. But the hard benches were replaced with more comfortable chairs. Those original benches are still in the gallery. This reduced the number of possible visitors. The middle floor now hosts smaller internal gatherings. The entrance floor now houses café spaces.
If you walk through the building, you’ll find a part of Tyskbagarberget in the courtyard. To lay the foundation, they had to blast away part of the mountain. Tyskbagarberget also gave way during the construction of parallel streets. This courtyard offers a unique view of the mountain.
Music has always been vital here. In 1883, a string band and a brass band were started. These groups still enhance services with song and music. The Frälsningsarméns tempel has consistently engaged in youth activities. Today, it also offers Sunday school during the morning service. It hosts regular gatherings for seniors and various activity groups.
The Salvation Army currently operates in 127 countries worldwide. This building on Östermalmsgatan 69 is special. It is the oldest Salvation Army building built specifically for that purpose. It has been continuously used as such ever since. People are still welcome to celebrate service here. It is hoped that it will remain so.
