Ten bronze pigeons. That’s what WellingtonNZ decided to use to celebrate local businesses. Each pigeon is unique. Each tells a story. Right here before us stands Pigeon No 1. Jonathan Campbell designed these charming bronze birds. He scattered them around Wellington. Each interacts with an object connected to a particular business. One pigeon has its head in a jar of peanut butter. This commemorates Fix & Fogg’s beginnings in Te Aro Park. Another might be perched on a burger. Or pecking at a pizza slice. Each small statue is a tribute to a local success story.
Sadly not all pigeons have stayed put. Some have mysteriously disappeared. Patty went missing for a while. She’s the pigeon standing on a burger. She was eventually found dumped in a bush. Pepperoni another pigeon holding a pizza slice also vanished. A memorial appeared where Pepperoni once stood. Flowers and candles marked the spot. A reminder of the pigeon’s theft.
