In the shadow of Table Mountain lies Crossroads. This isn’t just another township. Crossroads holds a story etched in resilience and the fight for a better life. Crossroads emerged in the 1970s. Workers displaced from a nearby farm sought refuge at “the crossroads,” finding only bush. They built shacks, a testament to their determination. These humble dwellings became a symbol of hope, a stark contrast to the overcrowded hostels of Guguletu. By 1977, Crossroads was a bustling community of 18,000 souls. Imagine families striving to create respectable homes amidst challenging circumstances. The apartheid authorities deemed Crossroads a “temporary camp” and issued eviction orders in 1975. But the residents of Crossroads wouldn’t be moved. A Men’s Committee and a particularly influential Women’s Committee rallied support, successfully resisting the forced removals. The “Save Crossroads” campaign gained momentum, with organizations like the Black Sash joining the fight. In 1978, Crossroads won a crucial victory. It was declared an “emergency camp,” obliging the council to provide basic services like water and refuse removal. The fight for Crossroads became a symbol of resistance against apartheid. The struggle continued into the 1980s, marked by internal tensions and violence. Disagreements arose within the residents’ committee, leading to clashes and the emergence of the “witdoeke” group. These men, distinguished by their white armbands, allied with the police against other residents, adding another layer of complexity to Crossroads’ story. Despite these hardships, the spirit of Crossroads remained unbroken. Even as violence and displacement forced some residents to flee, the community persevered. Crossroads stands as a powerful reminder of the human will to survive and thrive even in the face of adversity.
