Dream of soaring bells. Here at the Paróquia São Geraldo das Perdizes stands a testament to faith art and history. This church is more than just a building. It’s a landmark in São Paulo.
Paróquia São Geraldo das Perdizes was created in 1914. It was separated from the territory of the Paróquia de Santa Cecília. The church quickly became a beloved fixture. Its art and architecture make it a beautiful temple in the capital.
The first priest Côn. Péricles Gomes Barbosa is buried under the main altar. The Largo Padre Péricles is named in his honor. He played a vital role in organizing the church’s construction.
Look up at the tower. There you will find the “Bronze Velho” a large bell. This bell weighs 2500 kg. It is protected by historical preservation laws. The “Bronze Velho” rang out announcing Brazil’s independence to the city. It is one of the church’s most treasured relics.
The church’s history stretches back even further. Before Paróquia São Geraldo das Perdizes a small chapel stood here. This humble beginning was in 1876. It was known as “Santa Cruz das Perdizes”.
In 1942 the Matriz São Geraldo played a key role. The closing procession of the IV Congresso Eucarístico Nacional began here. It moved towards the Vale do Anhangabaú. This event highlighted the church’s importance in the city’s religious life.
The architect Georg Przyrembel designed the Igreja Matriz. Construction lasted over three decades. The church began being used even while incomplete in 1920. The main nave was opened in 1932.
Inside the Capela do Santíssimo Sacramento shows beautiful murals. These were completed in 1937. The artist Salvador Ligabue created them. He drew inspiration from the Escola de Beuron style.
The current Páraco is Côn. José Augusto Schramm Brasil. He has been with the church since 1990. Even before becoming a priest he helped in the parish.
Paróquia São Geraldo das Perdizes was officially recognized. CONPRESP listed it as a historical landmark. This ensures its preservation for future generations.
But there’s more to the story of the “Bronze Velho”. It was made in 1820 by Francisco das Chagas Sampaio. It features the arms of the Kingdom of Portugal. It also includes a verse from Psalm 150.
In 2020 Paróquia São Geraldo das Perdizes took on a new mission. It became the first church in its sector to implement the PPI. The Pastoral da Pessoa Idosa supports elderly people.
