Grotta a SW di Gabrovizza also known as the Bear Cave lies near Gabrovizza. It’s a significant archaeological site on the Trieste Karst. Its spacious entrance and relatively easy access made it a haven for both prehistoric animals and humans.

Imagine Neolithic people inhabiting the cave’s initial section. They left behind traces of their existence. Archaeologists have unearthed remnants of their meals and tools. Further inside in the deeper recesses cave bears once roamed. Fossil remains of over 23 animal species have been found. These include wolves foxes lions and hyenas but most notably the mighty Ursus spelaeus. The cave’s name is derived from these imposing cave bear remains.

Early excavations in the late 1800s were led by Marchesetti Neumann and Weithofer. Their discoveries now reside in museums in Vienna and Trieste. Later excavations continued into the mid-1900s. The finds include pottery tools and various artifacts. These items shed light on the daily lives of the cave’s inhabitants. They reveal their hunting and crafting skills. The sheer volume of bear bones illustrates the animals’ importance in the cave’s ecosystem.

The cave itself is impressively large. It extends for about 175 meters divided into three sections. The largest section measures around 20 meters wide and 39 meters deep. The drip of water creates muddy patches in certain areas. In the farthest part a massive collection of calcite formations blocks further passage.
