A cascading waterfall whispers secrets. Welcome to the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway. This isn’t just a park. It’s a living memorial. A place where history breathes.
The Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway honours Australian troops. They fought in Papua New Guinea during World War II. The battle raged from July 1942 to December 1943. Their bravery is etched into every stone. Every tree. Every carefully placed flower.
Walk the 800-metre path. Imagine yourself a soldier. Feel the humid air. The lush tropical vegetation. Twenty-two information stations dot the route. Each tells a story. A story of courage. Sacrifice. Enduring friendship. QR codes enhance your learning. You can delve deeper into each battle. Each significant location.
The Ralph Honner Kokoda Education Centre provides even more insight. Named after the 39th Battalion’s commanding officer. The centre showcases the incredible campaign. In November 2022 a digital honour roll was unveiled. It displays the names of approximately 620 Australians. They gave their lives on the Kokoda Track.
The Memorial Rose Garden is the entrance. Two semi-circular walls stand proudly. Over 500 plaques honour individuals and units. The Bruce Kingsbury VC Path leads you to the centre. Private Kingsbury also has a memorial garden nearby.
The walkway’s centerpiece is stunning. Granite walls bear sandblasted images from the campaign. Water cascades down. It adds to the serenity. It mirrors the jungle’s unforgiving beauty. The sounds. The smells. All carefully curated to transport you.
Kokoda Day is celebrated each year on November 3rd. It commemorates the raising of the Australian flag at Kokoda village in 1942. Anzac Day and Victory in the Pacific Day are also commemorated here. This is a place of reflection. A place of remembrance. A place where you can connect with the past.
Beyond the history lessons lies a beautiful spot. Perfect for picnics. Barbecues are available. Dogs are even welcome. The Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway isn’t just a memorial. It’s a park for everyone. A place to honor the past while enjoying the present. A place to connect with nature. To walk in the footsteps of heroes. To never forget.
