A sprawling green expanse unfolds before you. This is Kemper Park. Dedicated in November 1996 this park isn’t just a pretty place. It’s a testament to generosity. Mr and Mrs R Crosby Kemper and the Crosby Kemper Foundations of Kansas City Missouri made this park possible. Their generous donation funded the Thomas Jefferson Parkway a dream come true for visitors to Monticello.
Kemper Park covers 89 acres a significant portion of land alongside the Thomas Jefferson Parkway. It’s designed for peaceful recreation walking jogging biking and even bird watching. Imagine strolling along the Saunders-Monticello Trail one of the park’s many rustic hiking trails winding through woods. You might even spot some wildlife.
The park boasts a two-acre pond brimming with native wetland species. Picture yourself sitting by its tranquil waters. A variety of birds like blue herons green herons Canada geese and ducks frequent this pond. The pond is even stocked with indigenous fish. This peaceful pond is also a centerpiece of the park’s arboretum reflecting the vibrant autumn colors of the surrounding trees.
Beyond the pond lies the Carter Overlook offering breathtaking views of Charlottesville and the Blue Ridge Mountains. A truly stunning vista that makes Kemper Park even more special. The arboretum itself is a treasure trove of native trees and shrubs featuring unique outdoor rooms for quiet contemplation. Even the park’s 12-car parking area is thoughtfully designed with a decorative stone seat wall and a formal planting of Ironwood trees.
Kemper Park is a haven for nature lovers. Dogs are welcome but they must be on a leash. They are not allowed beyond the pond on the Saunders-Monticello Trail. This park is a gift open to everyone every day from sunrise to sunset. So take your time explore the trails enjoy the views and appreciate the generous spirit that brought Kemper Park to life.
