Tucked away in Toronto’s Roncesvalles neighbourhood lies Sorauren Park. It’s a place where the echoes of the past mingle with the laughter of today. Sorauren Park wasn’t always a green haven. It once housed a bustling bus garage for the Toronto Transit Commission. Imagine the rumble of engines and the hiss of air brakes. But the community had a different vision for this space. They rallied against the city’s plan to turn the garage into a storage facility for city vehicles. Their vision? A vibrant park for everyone to enjoy. Their persistence paid off. In 1995, Sorauren Park officially opened its gates, transforming a brownfield site into a community gem. The park’s history goes back even further than the bus garage. In the 1800s, it was a farm, later becoming home to industrial sites like a linseed oil factory and a Dominion Bridge Company factory. Traces of this industrial past remain. The park’s construction cleverly incorporated the concrete floor of the old bus garage, filling it over with soil instead of removing it. Today, Sorauren Park offers a variety of activities. Two mini-soccer fields host youth games. Two tennis courts welcome friendly competition, and a baseball diamond awaits the crack of the bat. A dedicated off-leash area allows dogs to frolic freely. In 2008, one of the former linseed oil buildings was reborn as a fieldhouse, a hub for community gatherings and meetings. In winter, the park transforms again. The fields become ice rinks, echoing with the joyful sounds of skaters. Every Monday, Sorauren Park hosts a vibrant farmer’s market, showcasing local produce, meats, baked goods, and more. The West-End Food Co-op brings together local vendors, creating a bustling marketplace right in the heart of the park. And then there’s the Pumpkin Parade, a unique Sorauren Park tradition. The night after Halloween, hundreds of jack-o’-lanterns line the park’s paths, creating a magical display. The glowing pumpkins, brought by neighbourhood residents, transform Sorauren Park into a whimsical wonderland for one special night. The pumpkins are then collected and composted, returning to the earth, ready to nourish new life. Sorauren Park continues to evolve. Plans are in place to convert the former linseed oil factory, located on the park’s south boundary, into a much-anticipated community centre. A town square, built in 2014 with community-raised funds, offers even more space for events and gatherings. Sorauren Park is more than just a park. It’s a testament to the power of community vision and a vibrant hub where history, nature, and community spirit intertwine.
