What secrets lie buried beneath the earth? We stand here, before Woollarawarre Bennelong’s Grave, a place that whispers tales of a life lived between two worlds. Woollarawarre Bennelong, a senior man of the Eora people, navigated the turbulent waters of British colonization, acting as a bridge between his people and the newcomers. His journey, marked by both cooperation and conflict, began with his abduction on the orders of Governor Arthur Phillip. Phillip, hoping to understand the Eora, held Bennelong captive. However, Bennelong’s spirit remained untamed, and he eventually escaped, only to return later and forge a complex relationship with the governor. Woollarawarre Bennelong’s Grave marks the final resting place of this remarkable man. His life was a whirlwind of experiences. He journeyed to England, dined with royalty, and even learned to speak English. Yet, upon his return to Australia, he increasingly sought solace in his traditional lifestyle and struggled with alcoholism. He became the leader of a clan at Kissing Point, a testament to his enduring influence. Bennelong died in 1813 on James Squire’s property, his friend and a brewer. He was buried in Squire’s orchard, alongside his wife Boorong and later, Colebee’s nephew Nanbaree. The exact location of Woollarawarre Bennelong’s Grave remained a mystery for centuries, obscured by the passage of time and the growth of the city. It was rediscovered beneath a residential property in Putney. This discovery transformed Woollarawarre Bennelong’s Grave into a powerful symbol of remembrance and reconciliation. Though the orchard is gone, replaced by the houses and streets of modern Sydney, the spirit of Bennelong remains, buried here beneath our feet. His story, a complex tapestry of cultures clashing and intertwining, reminds us of the enduring power of connection and the importance of honoring the past.
