Deep in the heart of Sheung Shui lies Ho Sheung Heung, a village steeped in history and tradition. Ho Sheung Heung isn’t just a name on a map. It’s a living testament to the enduring legacy of the Hau Clan, one of the Five Great Clans of the New Territories. Imagine arriving here towards the end of the 12th century, during the Southern Song dynasty, much like the Hau clan did. They chose this very spot, Ho Sheung Heung, as their first home in this land. From Ho Sheung Heung, the Hau Clan’s influence spread, giving birth to other villages: Yin Kong, Kam Tsin, and Ping Kong. These villages stand as a tribute to the clan’s deep roots in the region. Ho Sheung Heung itself is comprised of four distinct villages. These are Nam Pin Wai, Pak Pin Wai, Chung Sum Tsuen, and Chung Wai Tsuen. Pak Pin Wai, also known as Ho Sheung Heung Lo Wai, holds a special distinction. It’s a walled village, a reminder of times when communities needed protection. Within Ho Sheung Heung stands the magnificent Hau Ku Shek Ancestral Hall. Built during the late Ming dynasty, this hall is more than just a building. It is the heart and soul of the Hau clan’s heritage, built to honor their 17th-generation ancestor, Hau Ku-shek. The ancestral hall’s architecture tells its own story. The traditional three-hall, two-courtyard design reflects the deep respect for tradition. The altar in the middle hall, where ancestral tablets reside, connects the present generation to their past. Notice the red sandstone used for the drum platforms and door frame, showcasing the building’s importance. Look up at the roof ridges. They are adorned with intricate decorations. The camel humps, eaves boards, and tie beams boast exquisite carvings of auspicious motifs and folklore. These details whisper tales of the past, waiting to be discovered. In 2003, the Hau Ku Shek Ancestral Hall was declared a monument, a testament to its enduring cultural and historical significance. But it’s not just a relic of the past. It’s a vibrant hub where the Hau clan continues to worship their ancestors and hold traditional ceremonies. Ho Sheung Heung is more than just a village. It’s a journey through time. A place where history comes alive, whispering stories of the past and connecting generations.
