Nestled in the heart of Prague’s Strašnice district lies park Na Solidaritě. It’s a quiet haven. But don’t let the tranquility fool you. Park Na Solidaritě holds a fascinating story, echoing the spirit of post-war Czechoslovakia. Created after 1953, park Na Solidaritě sits amidst the Solidarita housing estate, a testament to the era’s ambitious urban planning. Architect František Jech designed the park’s layout. He envisioned a green space that complemented the surrounding community. This housing estate, built between 1947 and 1951, was Prague’s first major post-war housing development. It was a collaborative project, commissioned by six housing associations, six industrial companies, and state-owned companies. Jech, known for his pre-war functionalist designs, championed simple and efficient housing. This aligned perfectly with the communist ideals of the time. The estate featured a mix of three-story apartment blocks and two-story terraced houses. Each house had a small front garden. A communal garden stretched behind the rows of terraced houses, fostering a sense of community. Interestingly, the original living rooms in these houses had only windows overlooking the communal garden, no doors. Park Na Solidaritě was more than just a green space. It was part of a larger vision. The Solidarita neighborhood was designed to be self-sufficient. It included a school, pharmacy, shops, a doctor’s office, a clinic, and even a theater with a cafe and restaurant. The theater became a social hub. Residents gathered at the cafe. Locals showcased their talents on stage. Over the years, park Na Solidaritě has seen its share of changes. A fountain once graced the southern part of the park, but sadly, it no longer exists. Today, you’ll find modern amenities like DINA park benches, VEGA picnic sets, and RAILA litter bins. These additions blend with the park’s original design. They offer a comfortable space for relaxation and recreation. The park recently underwent a revitalization, thanks to the efforts of local residents. This renewed park Na Solidaritě continues to serve as a vital green lung within the bustling city. It offers a peaceful retreat and a connection to the past. It tells a story of community, resilience, and the enduring power of green spaces.
