Built in 1878 Grace Toronto Church stands proudly at 383 Jarvis Street. Its history stretches far beyond its current Presbyterian identity. The building began life as Old St Andrew’s Church a Church of Scotland congregation. A split in 1874 led to the construction of this very building. This was to accommodate those who wished to remain in the area. The original St Andrew’s moved west.

The building’s story takes an unexpected turn in the 1940s. Refugees fleeing Soviet occupation of the Baltic states found solace within its walls. Old St Andrew’s had joined the United Church of Canada in 1925. By 1950 it had merged with another church. The Jarvis Street building was sold. It became a central place of worship for Latvian and Estonian communities. The name St Andrew’s was retained. It remained home to these congregations until 2015.

Then Grace Toronto Church arrived. Founded in 1992 by Stephen Beck the church experienced a period of growth. Beck’s departure in 2002 led to a decline. Reverend Dan MacDonald took over in 2004. He and his wife Sue revitalized the congregation. Starting with just ten people Grace Toronto has since flourished. Its growth is a testament to its resilience and the dedication of its leaders.

Grace Toronto is a Presbyterian Church in America congregation. They follow the teachings of the Westminster Catechism. The church emphasizes a gospel-centred mission. They are committed to serving the city of Toronto. Their vision is to see Toronto renewed spiritually culturally and socially. They strive to create a place of grace mercy and peace. A place where differences are overcome by the power of the Gospel.

Today Grace Toronto Church continues to thrive within the historic walls of Old St Andrew’s Church. The building a symbol of enduring faith reflects multiple eras and communities. It stands as a testament to the power of faith hope and community. Grace Toronto’s story is a vibrant continuation of this rich legacy.
