Kyorin University was founded in 1970. However its roots go back further. The Mitaka Shinkawa Hospital was its predecessor. Shinyu Matsuda founded the hospital in 1953. It started as a sanitarium for tuberculosis. Later it expanded to include psychiatric and general medical care.
In 1966 the Kyorin Educational Foundation was established. This led to the creation of Kyorin Junior College. The junior college trained Medical Laboratory Scientists. It later became the Faculty of Health Sciences in 1979. The Kyorin University School of Medicine opened in 1970. The Tokyo Mitaka Shinkawa General Hospital became Kyorin University Hospital at that time.
Kyorin University has three campuses. The main campus is in Mitaka. The other campuses are in Inokashira and Hachioji. Each campus supports different faculties and departments.
