Seeking a tranquil escape from the city’s hustle? Mount Jefferson Park offers just that. This hidden gem, nestled within East Potomac Park, isn’t your typical park. It’s home to the iconic Jefferson Memorial. Mount Jefferson Park provides the perfect foreground for this neoclassical masterpiece. President Franklin D. Roosevelt envisioned a fitting tribute to Thomas Jefferson. He chose this very spot, south of the White House, for its prominence. Mount Jefferson Park itself played a role in the memorial’s construction. Originally, the area was home to a popular beach and numerous cherry trees, some rare varieties gifted from Japan. The prospect of their removal sparked protests, with people even chaining themselves to the trees! Revised plans ensured the survival of many of these beloved trees. They now frame the memorial beautifully, especially during the Cherry Blossom Festival. Construction on the Jefferson Memorial began in 1938, with Roosevelt laying the cornerstone in 1939. The memorial’s design, inspired by the Roman Pantheon and Jefferson’s own Rotunda at the University of Virginia, was a collaborative effort. Architect John Russell Pope initiated the project. After his death, Otto R. Eggers and Daniel P. Higgins completed it in 1943. Inside the memorial, a 19-foot bronze statue of Jefferson stands tall. Engraved on the interior walls are excerpts from Jefferson’s most influential writings. You’ll find passages from the Declaration of Independence, the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, and even personal letters. These words offer a glimpse into the mind of a man who championed individual liberty and religious freedom. As you stroll through Mount Jefferson Park, consider its unique history. From a popular beach to a site of protest and finally, to the serene setting for one of America’s most beloved memorials, this park tells a story of change and preservation. It’s a testament to Jefferson’s enduring legacy and the power of public spaces to inspire and reflect our nation’s values.
