Imprisoned, sentenced to death, yet Ryszard Kaczorowski’s spirit remained unbroken. Here at the Ryszard Kaczorowski Plaque, we remember a man who faced unimaginable hardship and emerged a symbol of resilience. The Ryszard Kaczorowski Plaque commemorates the last President of Poland in exile. It stands as a testament to his unwavering dedication to his country. Ryszard Kaczorowski, born in 1919, dedicated his life to serving Poland. As a young scout leader, he bravely resisted Soviet occupation during World War II. His courage led to his arrest and a death sentence, later commuted to hard labor in the harsh conditions of Kolyma. This experience, however, did not break him. Upon his release, Kaczorowski joined Anders’ Army. He fought valiantly in the Italian Campaign, including the pivotal Battle of Monte Cassino. After the war, unable to return to a Soviet-dominated Poland, he continued his work in exile in the United Kingdom. He remained active in the Polish community, notably leading the exiled Polish Scouting Union. In 1989, following the death of President Kazimierz Sabbat, Kaczorowski assumed the presidency of the Polish government-in-exile. A profound moment occurred in 1990. Kaczorowski symbolically transferred the presidential insignia to the newly elected Lech Wałęsa. This act marked the end of the government-in-exile and the beginning of a new chapter for Poland. Tragically, Kaczorowski’s life was cut short in the 2010 Smolensk air disaster. He was on his way to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre, a poignant reminder of the very oppression he had fought against. The Ryszard Kaczorowski Plaque serves not only as a memorial to a remarkable individual. It also represents the enduring spirit of Poland and its people. It’s a reminder of the sacrifices made for freedom and the importance of remembrance.
