Overlooking the bustling Danforth Avenue stands the Baitul Aman Masjid. It’s a place of peace and prayer. It sits right on the border of East Toronto and Scarborough. The Baitul Aman Masjid serves a vibrant community. Many members have Bangladeshi roots, reflecting the area’s nickname, “Little Bengal.” But the mosque welcomes everyone, regardless of background. The Baitul Aman Masjid offers a variety of services. Daily prayers, a children’s madressa, and Friday prayers are all part of the mosque’s offerings. It aims to be more than just a place of worship. The Baitul Aman Masjid strives to be a community hub. Lectures, symposiums, and religious instruction are among its goals. The mosque also offers support services for immigrants, refugees, and the unemployed. It actively promotes interfaith dialogue, fostering understanding and connection between different faiths. The Baitul Aman Masjid even has staff who speak both English and Bengali/Bangla. This caters to the diverse linguistic needs of the community. Two Jumah services take place every Friday. One features a Bengali khutbah at 1:30 pm. The other has an English khutbah beginning at 2:40 pm. The mosque thoughtfully accommodates women with a large prayer room accessible from the rear. Restrooms are located in the basement. A handicap-accessible washroom is available on the main floor. Just ask the mosque staff for the key. Getting to the Baitul Aman Masjid is easy. It’s conveniently located near public transportation. The Victoria Park subway station on the Bloor-Danforth line is a short walk away. Several TTC bus lines also stop nearby. For those driving, there’s a large on-site parking lot. Interestingly, the Baitul Aman Masjid occupies a former restaurant. It used to be the Tropical Nights Caribbean restaurant. Renovations have transformed the space into a functional mosque. However, more work remains to be done. The community is actively fundraising to purchase the building. They originally purchased the land and building for $1,850,000 in 2008. While they have raised a significant portion of the funds, they are still working towards their financial goal. The Baitul Aman Masjid represents a story of community effort and dedication. It showcases the power of faith and the importance of creating a welcoming space for all.
