“Kannon-sama’s blessings,” a woman whispered, clutching her prayer beads, “for a healthy child.” We stand before Kiyomizu Kannon-do, a serene hall echoing with such hopes for centuries. Kiyomizu Kannon-do, nestled within Ueno Park, isn’t a standalone temple. It is part of Kaneiji Temple, the Tokugawa shogun’s family temple. It stands as the oldest structure within the park, a survivor of fires and wars. Kiyomizu Kannon-do was built in 1631 by High Priest Tenkai. He modeled it after Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto, even naming the slope leading up to it “Shimizu-zaka”. The hall was strategically placed to overlook Shinobazu Pond, creating a tranquil scene. This view, featuring a distinctive “moon pine,” was immortalized in Utagawa Hiroshige’s “One Hundred Famous Views of Edo.” The original moon pine succumbed to a typhoon in the Meiji period. The current tree, planted in 2012, has a backup sapling waiting in the wings. Inside, the Thousand-Armed Kannon Bodhisattva, the hall’s main deity, watches over those seeking her blessings. This statue is said to be carved by the Heian-period priest Eshin Sozu. It is only unveiled once a year, on Hatsuuma Horaku, the first “horse day” in February. Another revered figure here is Kosodate Kannon, the goddess of childbirth and child-rearing. Mothers leave dolls as offerings, hoping for healthy children. These dolls are later burned in a ceremony, a poignant expression of gratitude and hope. Behind Kiyomizu Kannon-do, a cherry tree blossoms, carrying its own story. Named “Shushiki Cherry Blossom,” it commemorates a young girl whose haiku, hung on its branches, caught the eye of the abbot. Kiyomizu Kannon-do, a place of wishes whispered and hopes fulfilled, stands as a quiet testament to faith and tradition within bustling Tokyo.
