The name Hachikokuyama Ryokuchi comes from a tale. It is said that long ago, one could view eight countries from its heights. These countries were Kozuke, Shimotsuke, Hitachi, Kazusa, Sagami, Musashi, Shinano and Kai. Sadly today, trees block the panoramic view.
Hachikokuyama Ryokuchi is part of the Sayama Hills. The park preserves the natural beauty of the Musashino area. It is perfect for leisurely walks and seasonal flower viewing.
The park stretches about 1.5 km east to west. It measures around 300 meters north to south. Hachikokuyama Ryokuchi features mixed forests of kunugi and konara trees. These forests host diverse bird and insect life.
In the past, the Tosando Musashi Road passed near here. This was a major road during the Ritsuryo period. Traces of ancient settlements have been found. This includes artifacts from the 8th century.
You can still see remnants of a military encampment. It is associated with the Kusaka River Battle. History echoes through Hachikokuyama Ryokuchi.
The park officially opened in 1990. It became a green space in 1977 amid urban development.
