Tucked away in the Tai Lam area, lies a place with a story etched in explosives: the Tai Lam Explosives Magazine. This seemingly unassuming site played a crucial role in Hong Kong’s development, specifically during the construction of the Hong Kong Section of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link (XRL). The Tai Lam Explosives Magazine, licensed and used initially by MTR Corporation Limited until early 2016, became a vital storage facility. Imagine the sheer amount of explosives needed to carve a path through rock for 15 kilometers of tunnels and adits for the XRL. The Tai Lam Explosives Magazine, along with another at So Kwun Wat, ensured a steady supply to the construction sites, enabling 24-hour blasting operations and acting as a buffer against potential delivery disruptions. This particular magazine, the Tai Lam Explosives Magazine, served three crucial worksites under Contracts 824 and 822. It housed two stores, each capable of holding 400kg of explosives, enough to keep the project moving forward at “Shenzhen speed.” Interestingly, after the blasting work concluded in August 2017, the Tai Lam Explosives Magazine transitioned into its decommissioning phase. The area then underwent a transformation, as reinstatement planting works commenced in April 2018. Even the plant species chosen for the restoration tell a story. The original choice, C. Parthenoxylon, proved difficult to cultivate. It was replaced by a native species, C. camphora, demonstrating a commitment to the local environment, even in the aftermath of explosive activity. The Tai Lam Explosives Magazine is a quiet testament to the power of planning and logistical precision in large-scale infrastructure projects. It demonstrates how even sites dedicated to volatile materials can be seamlessly integrated into environmental restoration efforts.
