A weathered bronze plaque catches the afternoon sun. Its inscription speaks of a memorial. This is Station 15 Belvedere in Stuttgart.

Here at Station 15 Belvedere we stand on hallowed ground. This seemingly ordinary S-Bahn station holds a poignant secret. Its tracks once served a darker purpose. Between 1941 and 1945 this station’s loading tracks facilitated the deportation of over 2200 Jews. They were sent from all over Wurttemberg to concentration camps. Theresienstadt Auschwitz Riga and Izbica were among their destinations. The memorial serves as a stark reminder of this tragic chapter.

Stuttgart North station as a whole played a crucial role in the city’s railway history. Opened in 1896 it was initially called Prag station. This was quickly changed to avoid confusion with the Czech capital. The station’s initial purpose was to relieve pressure on the overburdened Stuttgart Central Station. It started with a passenger station and a large goods yard.

The growing traffic volume led to expansions and upgrades throughout the early 20th century. The construction of the Rankbach Railway in 1915 and the marshalling yard in Kornwestheim in 1918 lessened the burden on Stuttgart North’s freight yard. Suburban services began in 1926.

The original train depot is still standing today. It’s now a modern conference centre. Its transformation symbolizes a shift from the station’s industrial past to its present role.

But Station 15 Belvedere’s specific location within the broader Stuttgart North station complex makes it especially significant. It’s not just a platform. It’s a place where the weight of history rests heavy. Its quiet presence reminds us of the past. It encourages reflection on the importance of remembrance.

The future of Stuttgart North station is changing too. The Stuttgart 21 project will see many tracks removed. Only the S-Bahn tracks at Station 15 Belvedere will remain. However this doesn’t diminish the station’s historical importance. It will continue to bear witness to the past. The quiet dignity of Station 15 Belvedere stands as a testament to resilience. It’s a testament to the enduring human spirit.
