Tucked away in the vibrant Setagaya ward, lies Sōenji Temple. It’s a place of quiet reflection, steeped in history. Sōenji Temple’s story begins in the late Kamakura period. It was founded after the passing of the Kamakura Shogunate in 1317. Several theories surround its origins. Some believe it was established by Zonrin Mata or Kima Yoshinari. Others link Sōenji Temple to Hachiman Shrine. Inside Sōenji Temple, a small hall holds a statue of “Shozuka no Okami.” This deity is believed to cure coughs, attracting many worshippers during the Edo period. Over time, the practice faded into obscurity. However, in 1954, a local resident revived the tradition. The hall was renovated, and now the 7th of each month is dedicated to this unique practice within Sōenji Temple.
